Meet Chris Drown

Hi, I’m Chris.

I’m an independent construction advisor and the founder of Costa Rica Construction Advisory (CRC Advisory).

A lifelong interest in how things are built

One of my earliest memories is handing my dad tools from his red metal toolbox while he upgraded the electrical system in our home. Working alongside him taught me to pay attention to the details and use good materials.

He used to tell me, “A job isn’t finished unless it’s done right.”

That lesson has stayed with me through building homes, renovating my own properties, and now advising people buying, building, and owning homes in Costa Rica.

How I work

When you work with me, you work with me directly. I take on a small number of clients at a time so I can give each home and project the attention it needs. This allows me to get to know their homes, their priorities, and the decisions ahead.

Put the work in upfront

It’s much easier and less expensive to fix something on paper than in the field. I help you ask questions, clarify expectations, and consider your options early, while changes are still easier to make.

Follow the evidence

I explain what I find, why it matters, and what I would prioritize. When something needs further investigation, I explain what we know and what we still need to understand. I’m comfortable saying, “I don’t know, but I’ll find out,” including when that means bringing in another specialist.

Keep your interests at the center

I work independently, with no commissions, referral fees, or markups. My recommendation may be to spend less or leave something as it is. I explain the options and tradeoffs, and you make the decisions.

Experience shapes the questions I ask

I started with summer remodeling work in high school, then worked as a custom home builder’s assistant while helping maintain rental properties. I learned about building homes and the repairs and maintenance they need once people are living in them.

Encouraged by my boss and mentor, I continued my education in building sciences and construction management. My electrical education also taught me to troubleshoot systematically and understand how systems work.

I went on to work as a construction superintendent and later a project manager. Working on high-end custom homes taught me how planning, coordination, and decisions on site affect the finished home.

Later, my wife and I bought, renovated, and rented properties of our own. Being responsible for those homes gave me another perspective: what a decision means for the person paying for the work, maintaining the property, and living with the result.

Today, I bring those perspectives together at CRC Advisory. I look at how a home works as a whole and help you understand what the details mean for your plans.

The story behind the level

A mentor who taught me a great deal about construction gave me a level, which I still use to this day. That gift is why I chose a level to represent CRC Advisory. It reminds me of the person who helped shape how I approach the work.

Why Choose Us?

Making a home in Costa Rica

My wife and I sold our investment properties and moved to Costa Rica to create better balance in our lives. I took a break from homebuilding, and we welcomed our son during our first year here.

That time away reminded me how much fulfillment I find in construction. After becoming a permanent resident, I started CRC Advisory, putting my experience to use for people building and buying homes here.

Now I own and maintain a home in Costa Rica. Working on it with my son at my side brings me back to those early days with my dad.

Living here also shapes my advice. I learn from how local homes perform and respect construction methods that suit the climate. My goal is to combine what works well in Costa Rica with the comfort, function, and performance you want in your home.

Preparation and responsibility

I served in the U.S. Army National Guard and deployed to Afghanistan, where I built and maintained our outpost’s generators and electrical distribution system. That responsibility reinforced the importance of preparation, attention to detail, and accountability to the people depending on me. Those principles still guide how I work today.

Sharing what I’ve learned

I share practical construction knowledge through educational posts, podcast appearances, and seminars. My wife and I have also hosted Clemson University construction students here in Costa Rica.

Whether I’m talking with a homeowner or a group of students, I want people to understand how homes work and what that knowledge means for their decisions.

Independent advice, with a clear role

As your advisor, I review, evaluate, investigate, and recommend. I’m not a CFIA-registered architect or engineer, and I don’t design, stamp plans, or replace those professionals.

Whether you’re buying, building, or caring for a home, my role is to help you understand the information and weigh your options. You stay involved and make the decisions.
